Imagine studying business at a South African institution and discovering that your degree is now recognised alongside top business schools worldwide. Sounds ambitious? It’s now a reality for thousands of Boston City Campus students.
In June 2025, Denver Grigg, Head of the Quality Promotion and Research Unit at Boston, travelled to Las Vegas - not for the casinos, but to collect a historic achievement: Boston City Campus became the first and only South African higher education institution to receive accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), an internationally recognised mark of excellence in business education.
But that’s not all. While there, he and Dr Rob Stegmann, Boston’s Academic Head, were awarded the ACBSP International Best of Regions Excellence Award for their research into how Boston breaks educational barriers in South Africa.
So yes, we made history. And the world noticed.
What Is ACBSP - And Why Should You Care?
ACBSP is a global accrediting body focusing on teaching excellence, student outcomes, and continuous improvement in business programmes. It’s not only about research output; it’s about equipping students to succeed in the real world.
This accreditation means your degree doesn’t just carry weight locally. It now holds global relevance - a passport to opportunities worldwide.
Which Boston Programmes Are Now Internationally Accredited?
Boston’s ACBSP-accredited qualifications include:
This is a significant boost if you’re already studying in one of these programmes, or considering applying. You now hold, or could earn, an internationally accredited business degree that signals quality to employers and institutions worldwide.
What It Means for You
- Your degree opens global doors: Employers in New York, London, Sydney, or Nairobi will understand what your Boston qualification stands for - no explanation needed.
- You join an elite global network: ACBSP connects hundreds of institutions worldwide, thereby creating many opportunities for collaboration, recognition, and growth.
- You benefit from continuous improvement: Accreditation isn’t once-off. This means Boston regularly reviews and enhances its programmes to meet the evolving global standards.
- You get proof of world-class quality: Everything has been benchmarked against rigorous international criteria from curriculum to teaching and student support.
Innovation That Caught the World’s Eye
Boston achieved this recognition by addressing South African challenges in uniquely effective ways, rather than replicating models from the Global North.
Our online business education model combines national reach with deeply local impact. With 50 Support centres across all nine provinces, students can study from anywhere while accessing academic guidance, study spaces, and digital infrastructure.
This open distance learning approach, backed by full-time academic support, enables equitable access to quality education regardless of geography or circumstance.
Global Recognition for Local Impact
While receiving the accreditation in Las Vegas, Dr Stegmann and Denver Grigg presented their research on Boston’s model at the ACBSP global forum. Competing against representatives from all 11 international regions, their presentation won the International Best of Regions Excellence Award.
“We explored how Boston navigates the geographic, linguistic, socioeconomic, and institutional boundaries that often prevent access to quality education,” said Dr Stegmann. “This award validates the work we’ve done to make education both excellent and accessible.”
More Programmes on the Horizon
Boston isn’t stopping here. Two more qualifications are now in ACBSP candidacy status:
Both were designed with ACBSP standards in mind. Students enrolling from 2025 will be part of programmes Boston intends to submit for full accreditation after the first cohort graduates.
Technology That Connects - Not Replaces
One theme at the Las Vegas conference was the role of technology and AI in education. Boston’s take is clear: tech should never replace human connection; it should enhance access, consistency, and support.
“Technology is a bridge, not a substitute,” said Grigg. “The more sophisticated the tools, the greater the need for human support.”
At Boston, we use tech to bring quality business education to wherever students are, while offering real, personal support.
Boston: Proudly South African, Globally Recognised
- Boston is the first South African private higher education institution to join the Association of African Universities (AAU).
- We’re institutionally accredited by the British Accreditation Council (BAC).
- We’re the only South African institution with ACBSP accreditation for business programmes.
- Dr Stegmann serves on the ACBSP Scholar-Practitioner Committee, shaping future standards globally.
- Denver Grigg is Chair-Elect for ACBSP’s Region 8, with Boston preparing to host the 2026 conference in South Africa.
What This Means for You
- Current Students: Your qualification now carries international prestige and global recognition.
- Prospective Students: You can now access internationally accredited business programmes without leaving South Africa.
- Alums: Your Boston degree just got even more valuable. This recognition affirms the quality education you received.
