This NQF Level 7 professional teaching degree prepares students to teach learners from Grade R to Grade 3. Aligned with the Minimum Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications, it is registered, approved and recognised by the Department of Higher Education and Training as an Initial Teacher Education qualification for employment in the education sector.
Foundation Phase teaching is where children build the language, mathematics, life skills and learning habits that shape later schooling. This degree develops the subject knowledge, classroom practice, inclusive teaching ability and reflective judgement needed to support young learners with confidence.
Students also complete school-based Teaching Practice in approved South African schools, gaining structured classroom experience through observation, lesson planning, teaching, assessment and reflection. On successful completion, graduates are recognised as professionally qualified Foundation Phase teachers and may present the qualification for professional registration with the South African Council for Educators.

Entry Requirements
A minimum requirement for admission into the degree is a:
- National Senior Certificate (NSC), with English as one of the subjects passed and endorsement for admission to Bachelor’s degree study; or
- National Certificate (Vocational) (NC(V)), with English as one of the subjects passed and endorsement for admission to Bachelor’s degree study; or
- Senior Certificate obtained before 2009, with English as one of the subjects passed.
Alternative entry pathways may be considered for applicants with relevant post-school qualifications, subject to Matriculation Board endorsement where applicable.
These may include:
- Higher Certificate in Early Childhood Development, NQF Level 5, minimum Credits 120; or
- Diploma in Early Childhood Development, NQF Level 6, minimum Credits 240; or
- Higher Certificate in Education, NQF Level 5, minimum Credits 120; or
- Diploma in Grade R Teaching, NQF Level 6, minimum Credits 360; or
- An equivalent qualification from an international higher education institution, subject to the relevant requirements.
This programme is offered by Boston City Campus in the distance mode of education, with support provided at Boston Support Centres nationwide.
All modules are compulsory, with elective language choices where applicable, and must be passed.

Students require an overall mark of 50% to pass a module.
Students who do not achieve a pass mark in a summative assessment may be provided with one further opportunity to retake the summative assessment at an additional re-assessment fee.
