Lay Counsellor Short Course

The Lay Counsellor Short Course at Boston City Campus prepares you to offer basic counselling support within South Africa’s community and health environments. It gives you the practical skills needed to provide emotional guidance, with a strong focus on HIV counselling and HIV and AIDS support, which remain essential services across the country.

You build confidence in core counselling techniques, ethical practice and sensitive communication. The course strengthens your understanding of sexuality and HIV education and shows you how to support individuals living with or affected by HIV and AIDS. It also teaches you the limits and responsibilities of lay counselling so you can provide safe, informed guidance.

  • Sexuality and HIV Education 1 (OSHE1161)*
  • HIV Counselling 1 (OHIVC1161)*

*Formative Assessments are undertaken and the highest grade achieved in Formative Assessment is retained. The final grade is based on the Summative Assessment only. A maximum of one (1) additional supplementary assessment opportunity is provided for the Summative assessment, which will be charged for.
