There are few more meaningful responsibilities than helping a child take their first steps into learning. The early years of schooling shape how children read, reason, communicate, create, and see themselves as capable learners. It is during these foundational years that confidence is built, curiosity is nurtured, and lifelong habits of learning begin.
Recognising the importance of these early years, Boston City Campus proudly announces the launch of its Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching, a professional teaching qualification designed to prepare future educators for one of the most rewarding and impactful careers in society. The qualification equips students to teach learners from Grade R to Grade 3 and to become confident, compassionate, and highly skilled teachers who can make a lasting difference in young lives.
A Qualification with Purpose
The Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching is a four-year degree accredited as an Initial Teacher Education qualification and aligned with the Minimum Requirements for Teacher Education Qualifications. It is registered on the National Qualifications Framework at NQF Level 7 with a minimum of 498 credits and SAQA ID 125270. Graduates may present the qualification for professional registration with the South African Council for Educators and pursue further postgraduate studies in education.
This programme is about far more than theory. It is about preparing teachers who understand how children grow, how learning happens, and how classrooms can become spaces of belonging, joy, structure, and discovery.
Why Foundation Phase Teaching Matters
Foundation Phase teachers carry a unique responsibility. They introduce children to literacy, numeracy, problem-solving, social development, creativity, and self-belief. They do not simply teach subjects. They build the foundation on which all future learning depends.
In South Africa's diverse schooling environment, strong Foundation Phase teaching is especially important. Learners need teachers who can support different learning needs, embrace multilingualism, and create inclusive classrooms where every child feels seen and supported. Boston's BEd responds directly to this need by preparing graduates who are ready to teach with both competence and care.
What Students Will Learn
Throughout the degree, students engage with a carefully designed curriculum that blends academic knowledge, teaching practice, and professional growth. Areas of study include:
- Child development and educational psychology
- Literacy and language teaching in the Foundation Phase
- Mathematics teaching for young learners
- Life Skills, including arts education, physical education, personal and social well-being, and beginning knowledge
- Inclusive education and learner support
- Curriculum interpretation and lesson planning
- Classroom management and assessment practices
- Reflective teaching and professional ethics
- Education research skills
Students also develop digital literacy and learn how technology can support effective teaching in modern classrooms.
Learning Through Real Classroom Experience
One of the most valuable features of the programme is its strong Teaching Practice component, delivered through seven school placements at approved schools across South Africa. From an introductory six-week observation placement in a Grade R classroom in year one, through to extended four-week placements in year four, students observe experienced teachers, plan and present lessons, assess learner progress, and reflect on their growth.
Throughout these placements, students are supported by a dedicated team made up of a Boston Teaching Practice Educator, a Teaching Practice Supervisor, and a Mentor Teacher at the placement school. By the time they graduate, students have already spent meaningful time in classrooms and understand the realities, rewards, and responsibilities of the profession.
Embracing South Africa's Many Languages
True to South Africa's multilingual character and in line with the policy commitment to multilingualism, the BEd in Foundation Phase Teaching takes language seriously. While the language of instruction is English, every graduate leaves the programme equipped to work across South Africa's linguistic diversity.
Students select a First Additional Language from isiZulu, isiXhosa, or Afrikaans, and develop a Language of Conversational Competence. This means Boston BEd graduates are prepared to communicate meaningfully with learners and colleagues in more than one of South Africa's official languages. The degree certificate awarded on completion reflects these endorsements, with a second Language of Conversational Competence added where the student's National Senior Certificate already includes an African language or SA Sign Language.
This is not just a curriculum requirement. It recognises that strong Foundation Phase teachers need to connect with children in the languages of their homes and communities.
Designed for Modern Students
Boston understands that today's students need flexibility, accessibility, and strong support systems. The BEd in Foundation Phase Teaching is offered through online distance learning, supported by the TEXTBOOKS+ rich-media digital library and the ColCampus Learning Management System. Students access filmed lectures, prescribed texts, formal assessments, and ongoing teaching support online, anywhere, anytime, on any device.
Students also benefit from Boston's national network of 50 Support Centres across South Africa, where they can access ICT facilities, study and exam venues, and face-to-face support throughout their studies. Boston is accredited by the Council on Higher Education, registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training, and accredited internationally by the British Accreditation Council, giving the qualification recognised standing both at home and abroad.
Career Opportunities
Graduates of the programme may pursue careers such as:
- Foundation Phase classroom teacher
- Early literacy or numeracy specialist
- Learner support or remedial education roles
- School leadership and management pathways
- Education administration
- Further postgraduate study and academic development
For many students, this degree is the beginning of a lifelong career of service, leadership, and positive impact.
Admission Requirements and Alternative Entry Options
The minimum admission requirement is a National Senior Certificate or equivalent with endorsement for bachelor's degree study, with English as one of the subjects passed. Several alternative pathways are also available for prospective students.
Candidates who already hold a cognate post-school qualification, such as a Higher Certificate or Diploma in Early Childhood Development, a Higher Certificate in Education, or a Diploma in Grade R Teaching, may qualify for both admission to and advanced placement within the BEd, subject to evaluation of their academic record.
Candidates who hold a National Senior Certificate without Bachelor's endorsement also have a clear route in. Boston offers an accredited one-year Higher Certificate in HIV/AIDS Counselling and Management, which serves as a bridging qualification for endorsement for Bachelor's study. Successful completion provides recognised entry into the BEd in Foundation Phase Teaching, giving aspiring teachers a supported pathway to degree-level study.
