Feedback on Gradstar Gala Awards Dinner

The Gradstar Gala Awards Dinner was held at the Indaba Hotel, and it turned out to be a very swish affair! Gradstar flew all 100 finalists to Joburg and paid for their accommodation.

They were given over the period of four days, workshops, coaching and mentoring from the sponsoring employers. So what did the Boston students have to say?

Gabisile from Soweto told us that this has been a life-changing experience and she can’t wait to get back to campus and share what she has learnt

Nthabiseng from Germiston said the same,  and she is actually going to be a Gradstar ambassador going forward!

So while they were not selected for the top 10, getting into the top 100 out of 8000 was an enormous achievement!

Our two finalists were surprised and thrilled that a Boston director, senior manager and I were there to share their success – it meant a lot to them.

I could see why they got to the top 100 – very articulate, engaging and dynamic young ladies.

(We would like to acknowledge the selection in the top 100 of Jennisha from Umhlanga, even though she couldn’t come to Joburg due to a family emergency.)

Attendees heard an inspiring address by Hennie Heymans, the CEO of DHL Express, the lead sponsor of Gradstar.

Eric Albertini, COO of Future Fit Academy, head of the judging panel, explained the criteria they used throughout this whole process of assessment, to select future leaders who can ‘disrupt’, and not only survive but thrive in the ever-changing world and workplace – it’s mostly about ‘being’ (this will sound familiar to some of you!)

The audience enjoyed entertainment by Simmy, then all 100 finalists were called up and given a certificate before the top 10 were announced.

And then we left – but the youngsters partied on! Although Gabisile told us they had a workshop starting at 07:00 the next day ….

At Boston we are immensely proud of our students and graduates that go out there and DO. You know the Nike payoff line? Just do it? Well, we believe in that payoff line from the point of view that you cannot just sit back and wait for work or relationship or life success to fall in your lap. You have to make things happen! And Mr Thabang Kevin Khatide is one of our grads who is in the process of making things happen!

So what drove Thabang to try our his hand in this career with a difference? “After finishing high school at Pretoria Boys High, I knew I wanted to take a very different trajectory than most. I didn’t see myself going straight into the University, I decided to launch myself into the deep end in the world of entrepreneurship and business. I went on to attend many seminars and embarked on a personal development journey, and soon enough, acquired a key mentor who’s guided me into starting my own business after much ideation.” Thabang continues explaining why he added in some tertiary studies: “For the sake of appeasement of my mom! I decided to complete a short course at Boston City Campus, Lynnwood. The course was in The Principles of Management which had a plethora of ideal entrepreneurial elements.”

Above and beyond that, he stays in studies and “I occasionally take short online courses as well”. “I have a number of things going on in my life varying from my personal career to managing my business and company Velatswi which is a one of a kind city scooter touring company. I thoroughly enjoy spending my days knowing that I am working on a business that can transform many lives in the long run, and simultaneously the process and journey has allowed me to be stretched and challenged as an individual in various ways.” We all know that entrepreneurial ventures are difficult, what is the most difficult aspect for Thabang? “I least enjoy rejection but work through and around it nonetheless.“
Thabang explains what he does during an average day: “On my end the day would start off with an intense gym session followed by a shower and nutritional breakfast. After all that, it’s back to chipping off the daily tasks set out for the week from the Sunday prior to the week start.”

We asked Thabang if someone was thinking of following in his tracks, what would he recommend? He responded that they would need three important qualities:

  • Efficient time management
  • Resilience
  • Grounded character
And how would he describe an entrepreneurial job such as his? “Doing what I do requires someone who’s not only committed to their hustle but has the necessary discipline to fulfil all necessary duties and responsibilities across the board”. He does also believe in training and says, “Training and experience go hand in hand. You’ll need the training to excel when an opportunity opens up to gain the necessary experience.” While Thabang believes in training as discussed above, he also feels that personal development should be a priority. “Personally, I believe we live in a high opportunity world. A world where paper is no longer the prerequisite to get “paper”. I believe each person needs to qualify themselves in whatever they are passionate about and go about it the best way they deem fit to excel in said field. A starting point most ignore is most certainly personal development and really learning how to come into yourself and honing in on who you want to be in a few years’ time”. He has faced challenges such as starting and running a business in the height of the National Lockdown.
To grade 11’s and 12’s. he advises: “Know what you want and start paving the way on how you will get there, because nowadays we have many parents coaxing their children into career paths and degrees the kids are either not interested in or passionate about. The world has changed. There is a way for everyone to make it without always reverting to the traditional means. On tertiary studies he doesn’t adhere to the formal and strict discipline of all school leavers getting a degree, but he adds, “In due time I will probably enroll in some more short courses to add to my skillset and knowledge base. I’m always interested in attaining key information that I can immediately put to use vs it being assessed, marked, and only after some years have passed will I now fully be able to apply it all.” Would he continue his studies t Boston? “My first experience of Boston in an official setting was with the new Lynnwood branch in Pretoria and it had been nothing short of great. The staff was always on par with their friendly and inviting energy and mainly their helpfulness with their students”.

How BMH Grad, Michaelson Gumede found his true calling

In some way or another, we all grew up idolizing popular individuals in various professions, particularly in fields we sought to be experts in one day. When I was about 10 years old in primary school, I always looked forward to the arts and culture classes because my teacher was quite lazy and she would tell us to find an old magazine and cut out pictures, paste them in blank pages of an exercise book – sounds boring, right?

My classmates and I used to do this at least three times a week for 45 minutes and as you’d imagined, it really irked some of my mates. Ironically, I enjoyed that process because I would always come to class with two of the most popular soccer magazines in the country, ready to etch out my favourite players and engrave them into my book.

A couple of years after primary school, I fell in love with other professions like radio, particularly talk radio, and I was also fascinated with television production.  Also, I always wondered how advertisers were so sure that if they splashed their products all over television, newspapers, and radio, people would flock to their stores.
Advertising puzzled me and left me with so many unanswered questions.

It’s not unheard of for recent matriculants to suffer a little confusion when it comes to choosing a career path. My mind was half made up about studying journalism but part of me was still eager to learn about the makings of radio and figure out how those advertisers’ minds worked.

And then I came across a Boston media House billboard, talking about a Diploma in Media Practices where you get to learn everything media. At that time, Boston only offered a Diploma in Media Practices, but they now offer degrees and specialisations that rage from Digital Marketing & Animation to Television & Radio.

When I saw that billboard I didn’t hesitate, I applied and was immediately enrolled in the program. Trust me, that was one of my best decisions. I came to understand how advertisers segment particular targeted audiences and they advertise their products based on demographics and something called supply & demand. This Diploma gave me the opportunity to learn in a fully equipped, state of the art studio. We were taught the technical and presenting side of things, and to be honest, I was almost convinced to dump the written word for the spoken one, but passion prevailed.

My fascination with television production was finally put to bed and now I know how you can become a film director or a scriptwriter if you’re properly armed with that qualification. Most importantly, this Diploma fully equipped me with extensive knowledge in my specialization of journalism. And in a short space of time post-graduation, I saw my dream of being a sportswriter come to pass.

A lot comes with the specialisations that Boston Media House offers. For example with radio as a major, you can headline some of the biggest stations in the land just like DJ Fresh does as a breakfast show host. If you’re an introvert and not one for the spotlight, don’t panic, there’s plenty of room for you in the background. You can work as a technical producer or a content producer. Same goes for the marketing and advertising qualifications. Opportunities range from being an account executive to a marketing strategist.

I spent three solid years at the Media House Campus where I was brewed from raw stone to a sparkling diamond. If you read the back pages of The Citizen newspaper, six times a week, you are most likely to come across one of my masterpieces. If you ask me, the greatest thing about the institution is the intimacy of the campus. It is a lovely petite environment and the student culture is truly amazing!

“The Miss South Africa pageant for 2020 forges ahead despite the limitations of lockdown and after a round of public voting the field has been cut to 15 finalists.” Boston City Campus and Boston Media House are thrilled to have one graduate and one 4th year student amongst these gorgeous finalists!  We are rooting for:

Natasha Joubert (22), from Centurion, Tshwane, Gauteng is a Public Relations Officer at RFJ Inc. Attorneys and founder and owner of Natalia Jefferys (Pty) Ltd. She has a BCom Marketing Management Graduate from Boston City Campus.

And of course, we are also rooting for Olin-Shae De La Cruz (26) who comes from Bryanston, Gauteng and is in her final year of a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in Media Operations Management at Boston Media House.

Perusing the background of the 15 finalists shows how much the youth of today value higher education as well as entrepreneurship. These ladies are true role models and outstanding examples of leaders.

Graduation emerges as the best indicator of successful employment in the workplace”.  This is evident when comparing the statistics of youth in the 15 – 24 year old category with an unemployment rate of graduates at 31 % while youths who have other tertiary qualifications, a matric and less than a matric have an unemployment rate of 47,5%, 55% and 58,4%,  respectively,” states Ari Katz, CEO of Boston. “In our current pandemic that looks set to continue for an extended period of time, both locally and globally, the value of higher education and moreover, a degree, has increased drastically in order to successfully find and maintain employment. “Qualifying with higher education shows your employer that you have staying power, commitment and self-confidence, which is very attractive to companies looking to find new and creative ways to increase production, sales and effectiveness in service”, says Katz. Therefore these ladies have identified for themselves that attractiveness comes in different formats!

While Covid19 has affected all previous stats and reports, the following remains valid, perhaps even more so in this current environment. According to a 2018 World Bank Report Overcoming Poverty and Inequality in South Africa : An Assessment of Drivers, Constraints and Opportunities; a higher level of education of the household head and having access to stable labour market income,  are key determinants for households to achieve economic stability in South Africa.

“Living in a household where the head has attained some tertiary education reduces the average risk of poverty by about 30 percent compared to those living in households where the head has no schooling,” says the report which states that poverty also tends to be a more temporary phenomenon for those with higher labor market earnings.

“Our youth need to be equipped to maximise workplace opportunities.  As educators we can further equip them with entrepreneurial skills, where our graduates are groomed in leadership, enabling them to start new businesses while contributing to the creation of new employment opportunities which sets up a virtuous cycle of job creation. These two stellar young ladies are amazing role models for school leavers, having committed to and achieved quality education” concludes Katz.

A Broad Based BCom gives you the edge in business.

“Opportunities don’t happen. You create them,” says Chris Grosser. I believe this quote to be 100% authentic as it truly illustrates my personal journey with Boston. So, says Oriellah Davis, BCom graduate of Boston City Campus. “After school, there are so many opportunities staring students straight in the face, however, there always is that daunting question about “What it is you really want to do after school?” How many of us really have the answer to that question? I’m guessing not many. It is because of that daunting question that I found myself enrolling at Boston to begin my tertiary schooling career, and although having no clue as to what it was I wanted I was able to find it through my educational journey at Boston”

Oriellah continues that no matter where you stand on the academic scale, “I found that by doing my BCom degree in Management Marketing that it was an outstanding way for me to secure my future endeavours, whatever they were to be. I think when it comes to getting a job, it’s all about your interpretation of how you can make all those years of theoretical studying into something practical. I really felt that Boston gave me that chance. They very much encouraged me to work hard and follow my passion. As I began to study more and more, I realised that there was so much room to implement the theories and concepts I had learned in my textbooks into real-life situations”.

Oriellah continues saying that she is so grateful to Boston as “I had the opportunity to work for 3.5 years and study my BCom simultaneously. In October 2019 I was offered my first Marketing Internship at a Digital Marketing Agency called CBR Marketing. Its truly been an unbelievably fulfilling experience for me and I hope that all those other hard-working graduates get to experience the same feelings that I was able to experience.”

Nonhlanhla Dube, counsellor at Boston, says that “B.Com. Graduates are preferred in the H.R. Department in all areas of Corporate Sector, Tourism, Hospitals, and Hotel Industry —because they have the fundamental knowledge of finance, marketing, operations and systems, budgeting and business planning.”

Commerce graduates having studied marketing and marketing management can also look at positions in management, consultation, product management, market research, and public relations — in the Promotional and Advertising Sectors.

Banking is an option for graduates of BCom Management Marketing and the Bachelor of Accounting. Bankers are now involved in customer services, investments, advice and more. There are a whole lot of people involved in the field including the dealing room, the operations, compliance, research, and sales. The Insurance Sector is an area with almost unlimited potential. The Insurance Industry is emerging as one of the largest employers in the country today. Commerce graduates will also find profitable openings in this field as agents or in other capacities.

Start generating ideas and let your mind be open to all possibilities. Entrepreneurship is about initiative, imagination, flexibility, creativity and the capacity to see change as an opportunity. Commerce graduates are well suited to entrepreneurial opportunities as they will need the ability to plan and act with a financial background.

Nonhlanhla concludes that commerce graduates gain good employment prospects. “The choice is yours, look at all the opportunities, ask questions and seek advice. There is almost no area of business today where your analytical, accounting, marketing, and H.R. skills cannot be used.  No other degree has the advantage you have in the job market. You will learn a variety of subjects and develop skills best suited for today’s globalised business requirements”.

SA institution aligns itself for graduate placement and alignment with corporate SA

Are SA graduates more likely to find employment?

According to the latest stats released by Stats SA for Q1 2019, unemployment impacts most heavily on South Africa’s youth in the 15 -24 age group, with the youth in this age group experiencing an unemployment rate of 55.2 %.  Graduates fared better than their non-graduate peers, with an unemployment rate of 31,0% during this period.   However, compared to the graduate unemployment rate of 19.5% for Q4 of 2018, the graduate unemployment rate increased 11,4 percentage points quarter-on-quarter.

“However, as Stats SA points out, the graduate unemployment rate is still lower than the rate among those with lower educational levels, meaning that education remains key to these young people’s prospects’ improving in the South African labour market,” states Ari Katz, CEO of Boston City Campus..

Stats SA reports that the burden of unemployment is concentrated amongst the youth (aged 15–34 years), accounting for 63,4% of the total number of unemployed persons.

This means that almost 4 in 10 young people in the labour force are without a job, with the unemployment rate within this group at 39,6% in the 1st quarter of 2019. Just under 30% of the youth have jobs and about half of them (48,8%) participate in the labour market.

“Education levels, a stable economy and labour market are key factors which can contribute to alleviating unemployment in South Africa.  In turn, this will enable households to achieve economic stability,” says Katz.

Using these stats as motivation, Boston Has created a unique programme in the education market. Called Graduate Support Services, it includes a process to follow starting at the graduate’s branch and following through the HOD of the support programme. “The intention is to provide a number of practical steps for the graduate to follow, hand-holding if you will, to assist the graduate step by step to eventual successful job placement. “ In fact “, says Katz, “ we believe in this programme, together with our quality education to such an extent, that should the graduate who has adhered to all our T’s and C’s and all our recommendations and still not find a successful placement, we will give the graduate a postgraduate scholarship.”

Pretty much everyone who undertakes a journey to university is thinking about the amazing career prospects they will have once they complete their bachelor’s degree. In recent years the graduate job market has become increasingly fierce, and standing out amongst all the other recent graduates is tough. It is likely to take some years to climb the career ladder, and a mindset of continuous learning is an advantage.

“Tomorrow’s leaders must be equipped with new-age competencies in order to have successful careers.” So says Ari Katz, CEO of Boston City Campus & Business College. “This will ensure that graduates will be in demand by employers,” he says.

Accredited by the Council on Higher Education, at level 8, the Boston Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PG Dip) provides prospective graduates, (with or without work experience),  with a unique postgraduate opportunity to gain advanced knowledge of business and general management.
