Dear  HE Students

I trust you are well and revising your work for the upcoming SA1 assessment events.

With reference to The Invigilator App that we will be using during the SA1 exams.

Why are we using it?

  • The use of this app assists in protecting the integrity of our assessments, and ultimately, the integrity of your qualifications.
  • We must keep diminishing the risk associated with the authenticating of assessments.
  • This is like the introduction of plagiarism software for specific formative one and summative two events that we activated from this semester onwards
  • The app is part of specific summative one events, as well as a particular time frame for each.
  • The country is no longer under level 5 or 4 but under level 1 restrictions.
  • Throughout South Africa (at all universities and colleges including matriculants), students are being encouraged and assisted to complete invigilated assessments
  • The use of the App allows you to choose where you want to write your exams. (from home or work or the Support Centre)
  • MCQ exams – as you know, these must be completed in two hours, but we have added an extra 15 minutes to each to compensate for the use of the App
  • Short/long/essay question exams – an additional hour has been added here to compensate for the use of the App and uploading of the answer sheet/pdf onto ColCampus.

We are amenable to play our part and to keep reducing the risk associated with the virus by limiting travel to remain at work/or home when undertaking assessments, and when opting to make use of a support centre – all students will be treated the same by having to participate within the same time frame and deploying the app.

If you select to write from home, please find a quiet and peaceful spot so that you can remain focussed and concentrate on the assessment. If there is no such space, please contact your Support Centre asap so that you can book a seat to write at the Support Centre according to the Academic Calendar.

You can also make use of a family member or a friend’s phone to download the App, register for it and use it for the 2 or 3 hours during every assessment event, if so needed. The App is only about 95 MB in size to install and uses less than 25 MB’s per assessment event, so extremely little data is required. Also, the App is not online during the assessment event, so it uses no data then. The only time data is required, is to login and activate the App just before the assessment event starts and again at the end of the assessment event, when you save and exit. The App works offline during the assessment event.

Please remember to register for the App and to participate in the Mock Exam as per the information provided in the Student Guidance document attached in the announcement.

We appreciate that nervousness tends to set in before any form of exam and we encourage you to review your Tuition Plans in the Course Outlines, your Formative assessments and memos, your Sample assessments and memo’s in the Course Outlines, your textbooks, video materials as well as your own summaries and study notes you have compiled since the onset of this semester.

Boston will discontinue all ICB qualifications effective Tuesday 15 September 2020.

Q – What does this mean for existing students?

A – This has no impact whatsoever on existing students, who can continue their studies until they have obtained their ICB qualification.

Q – What does this mean for new applications?

A – Boston will no longer accept first-time registrations for ICB qualifications from Tuesday 15 September 2020.

Q – As an existing ICB student registered at Boston, will I still be able to make use of my Support Centre for exams, access to ICT to study, etc.?

A – Yes, nothing changes in this respect, studies and support services continue as usual

In line with our communique on 25 May, we have submitted a revised plan on 27 May for the return of specific groupings of students and staff at level three and subsequent levels. This amended plan is currently with the DHET for approval. Upon confirmation, barring any adjustments required, we will communicate which groups of students will be allowed back as of 8 June 2020. Please note that HE Students who have selected the Option 2 Calendar to participate in and submit FA1’s & FA2’s will be allowed an extension to submit, the amended due date is 12 June. We are currently busy preparing our Support Centres and putting in place the requisite screening, cleaning, sanitizing, and other protocols for a safe and managed return. Herewith an important update on the HE Assessments, Due Dates and Calendars for SemA-2020.

As we initially entered the lockdown period, we extended FA1 to be included with FA2 on the 8th of May, trusting that Support Centers would have reopened towards the end of April.

‘The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry’ and it is now apparent that Support Centres might be able to open beginning of June.

To balance the needs of all of our valued students, we have set up two (2) Options-Calendars.

  • Option 1-Calendar, serves students that HAVE access to the internet/data and a computer (ICT) from home/work, etc. and are able to complete/submit/participate in the assessments within ColCampus

FA1 & FA2 Option 1-Calendar: Students who HAVE ACCESS to ICT (computer and internet access):

  • The due date, for the submission and/or completion of both assessments, of 8 May remains as is
  • Results release date, Appeals etc remain as is
  • Memoranda will not be released

​SA1 & SA2 Option 1-Calendar: Students who HAVE ACCESS to ICT (computer and internet access):

  • The SemA-2020 Calendar will stay as is, refer attached.
  • All ‘paper-based’ SA1’s and SA2’s are to be completed as assignments/projects from home/work and must be uploaded onto ColCampus on the date of which the sit-down paper would have been written on, by no later than 23:59.
    • The ‘paper-based’ SA1’s will be made available from 09:00 on the scheduled date
    • The ‘paper-based’ SA2’s have been made available at the onset of the semester
  • SA1’s that are MCQ exams in ColCampus. These will be done from home/work as well. This means that you need not book for these and will complete the MCQ exam as you do your FA2 quizzes. A timer will be set in ColCampus that automatically closes the MCQ exam once the time is up. You will, therefore, have to prepare in advance as you would have if you were to come and write at the Support Centre. To allow for possible IT-related hurdles, we will increase the time allowed to 3 hours per MCQ exam.
    • These will be made available from 09:00 on 25 May until 23:59 on 9 June, therefore students can complete the MCQ exams on a date and time that suits them as long as it falls within this period
    • Important note, you will have only one (1) attempt
  • SA1’s that are project/assignment based in ColCampus remains unchanged
  • As all SA1 exams are now completed at home/work, as ‘take-home’ exams, no exam scopes will be released
  • Appeals period remains as is
  • The Supplementary SA1 & SA2 calendar remains unchanged but will be done from home the same as SA1 and SA2 above.

FA1 & FA2 Option 2-Calendar: Students who DO NOT HAVE ACCESS to ICT (computer and internet access) at the moment:

  • The due date for the submission and/or completion of both assessments is Monday 8 June 2020 at 23:59
  • These results will be released on Friday 19 June at 13:00
  • Appeals close Wednesday 24 June and Appeal Outcomes to be released Friday 26 June 2020
  • Memoranda will not be released

SA1 & SA2 Option 2-Calendar: Students who DO NOT HAVE ACCESS to ICT (computer and internet access) at the moment:

  • Please refer to the Option 2 SA1 and SA2 calendar attached. These are scheduled to take place from 22 June till 6 July
  • All ‘paper-based’ SA1’s and SA2’s are to be completed as assignments/projects from home/work or at the Support Centre and must be uploaded onto ColCampus on the date of which the sit-down paper would have been written on, by no later than 23:59.
    • The ‘paper-based’ SA1’s will be made available from 09:00 on the scheduled date
    • The ‘paper-based’ SA2’s have been made available at the onset of the semester
  • SA1’s that are MCQ exams in ColCampus. These will be done from home/work or at the Support Centre.   • If you need to participate in Supplementary SA1 or SA2, it will be completed during Weeks 5 & 6 of SemB-2020. Please refer to the attached Option 2 Calendar.

Important to note: all pre-requisites for SemB-2020 will be waived. This means that students who are now in SemA-2020, can register for their SemB-2020 modules at the start of SemB-2020  regardless of the pre-requisite modules as stated in every programme Fact Sheet.

ICB Frequently asked Questions.

On 29 April 2020, the ICB made a subsequent announcement whereby all MAY 2020 exams have been postponed until further notice.  Communication to this effect has already been distributed to all providers.  The ICB will publish the Revised Exam Timetable in due course.

We understand that this causes confusion and frustration for campuses and our students. 

We therefore prepared the following FAQ for your reference. 

FAQs

1. Have all ICB exams for April/May 2020 been postponed? YES – All ICB exams scheduled for MAY 2020 has been postponed until further notice.

2.  I was scheduled for the April exam that was subsequently postponed to the May exam.  Do I have to do my own booking for the next exam sitting? NO – Your next exam date (to be announced) will be automatically rescheduled by the ICB. We do however encourage that you contact your TA to confirm.

3.  What if there is an exam date clash?  I am booked for two exams at the same time.  May I contact the ICB? YES – Please advise the Boston TA.  They will liaise with the ICB in this regard.

4.  What if I was not scheduled for the April exam, do I have to make a booking for the next exam sitting? YES – If you were not scheduled for the April exam sitting AND did not make your booking for the initial MAY exam by Saturday, 11th April 2020, you will have to make your own booking for the NEXT exam sitting as per ICB exam Table. NOTE:  THE ICB will publish the exam table in due course.

5.  I postponed my March exam and did not made a booking for the May sitting.  Do I have to make a booking for the next exam sitting? YES – Anyone, that was NOT registered or booked to participate in the March, April or MAY exam sitting, MUST make a booking to participate in the next exam sitting. NOTE:  THE ICB will publish the exam table in due course.  

6.  I have a Paper POE in my possession that was due for Submission in April 2020, will this be accepted for submission? NO – No PAPER POE will be accepted.  Learners will have to redo the POE in MACCI.

7.  The POE requires me to PRINT and submit my assignments.  As I will not be able to submit a HARD copy submission and do not have access to a printer, MUST I still complete the Assignments? YES – The system makes provision for you to download the assignments without having to print them.  In the interim we encourage students to retype their answers on another page until further guidance is received from the ICB. The ICB will provide final instructions closer to the time.

8.  I did not pass my exam.  Will I be allowed an opportunity for re-assessment?  YES – You are allowed a re-assessment but you will be required to pay the FULL fee AND re-do the exam and the POE.

9.  I was scheduled to write the APRIL 2020 exams, which was postponed to MAY 2020.  I have been informed that the ICB never confirmed my rescheduled date for MAY 2020. Will I be automatically scheduled for the next exam sitting? YES – If you were scheduled for April 2020 and did not receive your confirmation of postponement to the new exam date for the initial MAY 2020 exam, please inform your TA / Campus immediately. We will liaise with the ICB on your behalf to confirm that you will be scheduled for the next exam sitting.

10.  I was scheduled to write the MAY 2020 exams and requested a postponement to another exam date. Will I be automatically scheduled for the next exam sitting? NO – If you were scheduled to participate in the May 2020 exam, and requested a postponement by 24 April 2020, you will not be automatically scheduled for the next exam sitting. You must, therefore, book your exam date as per the new ICB Exam timetable. NOTE:  THE ICB will publish the exam table in due course. 

11.  Will the next exam also be an on-line exam? YES – The next exam will also be an on-line EXAM.  No Paper Exam or Paper POE will be allowed.  There is no confirmation at this stage of when the ICB we will be able to conduct physical exams again. This will be revised and adjusted in lines with

  1. the government restrictions and regulations;
  2. when it is deemed safe to gather people in the same spaces
  3. when it is deemed safe for our invigilators and assessors to physically handle PoE’s and/or

when Boston and other Colleges have physically re-opened.

12.  What if I am not ready to participate in an online exam. Will I have the option to postpone? YES – Learners may either choose to:A:   Write the exam online.  Depending on the Covid-19 lockdown situation on the date determined. The regulations regarding these exams will be communicated in due course, but students may choose to do their exams at home, or your college, or any other venue.  This will apply to any student who wishes to sit for the exam, whether you are at a classroom or distance provider. At the time of update (20th April 2020) it is most likely that you will need to take your exam at home. Please consider this in your decision.ORB:  Postpone your exam to a future date, when you will be able to possibly write a paper-based exam.   We cannot confirm or are unable to predict at this time as to when the next paper-based exam date will be.

13.  What if I do not have access to a computer or stable internet connection.  Will I still be able to participate? NO – ICB will not be able to facilitate physical exams due to the restrictions placed as a result of the COVID-19 regulations. Learners will have to request a postponement for the next on-line exam sitting unless the Colleges have re-opened and government regulations permit. Postponement arrangements will be accommodated to allow students to make individual choices based on their own circumstances.

14.  If I registered or postponed for a future date and there is still a lockdown, can I postpone again for free? YES – All learners will be allowed free postponements for a paper-based exam sitting which was canceled by the ICB due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, should Campuses have re-opened and learners are able to gather and sit for the exam sitting, postponement fees may be applicable.

15.  I have already started working on my POE in MACCI and now I want to postpone my exam. Will my work be available on MACCI after the postponement OR will I lose all the work already completed?  Would I have to start over? N/A – We have received concerns where learners’ work on MACCI was lost after a postponement was effected. We therefore strongly advise ALL learners to adequately save their work in a secure folder so that they may be able to retrieve it at a later stage.

We are keenly aware that the above will have many learners unsettled and that what is current and new may change as the situation unfolds.  We will do our best to keep you updated with the relevant information as we receive it.

Dear Student:

Thank you for the positive engagement, it is also heartwarming to see so how many of you are making the most if this time in keeping up with your studies.

We fully appreciate the challenges with accessing data, which is an issue throughout all sectors of South Africa.

To this end, we have either written direct pleas to the telecom companies, or have done so via stakeholder forums, requesting them to assist you, our valued students, with either further reductions or with zero-rating of the websites required for your teaching and learning.

In the interim, we implore you to turn your focus to the textbooks. Reading, studying, engaging with the self-assessment activities and making new meanings of the concepts and practical application of the various theories presented.

Gaining deeper compression of the underlying literatures now will stand you in good stead later on once you will be able to review these by watching the video lectures, engaging with online interactions and T&L activities, typing up your assignments for submission, and completing the summative assessments.

Please be assured that we are monitoring the government notices and advice and will continue to update you when changes are required.

Your continued focus, on achieving the ultimate goal which is to obtain your qualification, together with enhanced flexibility during this nationwide lockdown period will only come to stand you in good stead in the near future.

Due to the National Lockdown to curb the spread of COVID-19, some banking branches will be temporarily closed.

  • All essential banking services will remain open during the lockdown to ensure clients can continue to access financial services. All call centres, ATMs and point of sale (POS) devices will be operational.
  • Customers are encouraged to transact at ATMs and from their homes – by internet and with smartphone applications – wherever possible, and only visit branches when absolutely necessary.
  • Banks will keep open as many branches as necessary.

Hi Bostonites! We hope you are all looking after yourselves and your loved ones during this strained time J

We wanted to share some academic updates, so that you are in touch with what needs to be done to stay up to date with your work.

At this stage, Higher Education exams remain scheduled from 25 May onward. In the event that the lock down is extended beyond 30 April, alternative strategies will be considered, perhaps an extension into the month of June, or perhaps for smaller groups, or in certain cases online exams. Whatever the outcome, rest assured that your continued academics are our top priority.

Today, no changes are being made to the current exam schedule. We will continue to inform and update you of change and schedules.

For now, please focus on completing your formatives due 8 May. Remember to reach out to your Student Advisor or Educator if you need any help at all.

For our Occupational, Institute and Short Learning Programme students, the study plans remain unchanged. Stay focused on your study guides and completing online assessments.

Due to the nature of the course material and videos on our Learner Management System you require a stable and reliable internet connection to view videos.

When you experience the following problems with videos on ColCampus:

  • Video takes a long time to open
  • Video plays for periods and then pauses
  • Poor video quality

Please check the speed of your internet connection by using the following online tool: www.speedtest.net.

To ensure that you are effectively testing your connections speed to our online server please follow these steps:

  1. While Speedtest.net is open select “Change Server”
  2. Type in Washington and select “Washington DC – AT&T”
  3. Notice the server has changed to what was selected above
  4. Click “GO”

Your connection download speed should be at least 2.5 Mbps to successfully stream video content from our server over the internet.

Factors which may influence a bad internet connection:

  • Bad Wi-Fi reception connecting you to the internet (Your wireless connection to a Wi-Fi internet access point). Try moving closer to the Wi-Fi router.
  • Internet Server provider connection problems. These include cell phone towers, cable problems and International fibre cable breaks. Please contact your internet service provider for assistance.
  • The internet data plan that you have with your service provider may limit your connection speed. Please contact your internet service provider for assistance
  • Shared internet connection. The more people who access the same shared intent connection as yourself, the slower the connection will be. Utilise times where fewer people are using your shared connection.
  • Computer viruses. Make sure you have credible anti-virus software installed on your device.
  • Other software on your device connecting to the internet. Make sure other software is closed when accessing ColCampus.

Please use the Chrome browser to access ColCampus. If you have problems with opening videos in the Chrome browser, please follow these steps.

STUDENT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING MICROSOFT 

After lengthy discussions with Microsoft, and in light of the COVID-19 virus, Microsoft have agreed to extend the retirement dates for the MCSA  certification and modules to 31 January 2021.

This decision influences the modules mentioned below.

The following international Vue exams are affected:

  • 70-740 – Installing, Storage and Compute with Windows Server 2016
  • 70-741 – Networking with Windows Server 2016
  • 70-742 – Identity with Windows Server 2016

We urge you to continue studies on TestOut, and to make sure you are prepared for the VUE exams before writing them.

  • The MCSA modules are available on ColCampus. These modules contain links to the TestOut site. A Certified Microsoft Systems Engineer (Nigel Shonhiwe) has been added to these modules as an educator to assist students on these modules, with problems and queries.
  • A message has been posted on these modules to inform learners of the extension dates of retiring examinations.
  • Please make use of the TestOut practice exams. A student should not attempt the International VUE exams before they have passed the TestOut exams. These exams can be taken as many times as needed.

When you purchase your laptop please note that you don’t need to purchase Microsoft Office.  You can access a copy of Microsoft Office FOR FREE, by logging onto portal.office.com using your @Myboston.co.za email address.  You can then download your free version of Office.

You will use Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel etc.) to complete course tasks, as well as to create assignments to submit online for HE.

Again : ALL students currently registered at Boston will get Microsoft Office for free, even if you have purchased your laptop elsewhere, or are already in possession of a laptop.

Boston’s policy statement on the Covid-19 pandemic.

We have discussed and debated how best to serve you, our valued students, during this uncertain time.

Therefore we are changing the FA1 due date as follows:

FA1 is now due on May 8th 23:59, in ColCampus.

This is the same day that FA2 is due – both FA1 and FA2 are due on the same day.

FA1 and FA2 results will be released on the same day: Tuesday 26 May at 17:00.

Appeals will be open for both FA1 and FA2 as of Wednesday 27 May, and this window will close again on Friday 29 May at 17:00.

Appeal Outcomes will be released as they are processed, but the final date of the appeal outcomes will be Friday, June 5 at 13:00.

We realise that the above appeal outcomes dates fall within the exam time table, but this is the best way to accommodate all of our students, and believe it to be the least disruptive route.

The revised due date for FA1 and FA2 means you can now comfortably plan the remainder of your studies and remain on track with the weekly teaching & learning requirements as set out in the Tuition Plan of each Module.

Furthermore, the revised due date allows you time to plan intervals for studying from your textbooks, drafting your assignments, working on the self-assessment questions & exercises. In turn, this change enables you to plan when and where, if you wish to do so, to go online to catch up on your video lectures and online interactions.  We encourage you to submit FA1’s and FA2’s before the due date of 8 May. It may be that you have already completed FA1 to free you up to focus on or attend to your family needs for a while. Alternatively, you could be planning to complete FA1 and FA2 before the due date to coincide with an opportunity to access the internet so that you can submit and complete a quiz online.

Our message is: ‘please don’t leave your formative assessment(s) to the very last minute. Life happens! And, in our current global environment, we can’t control or predict what lies around the corner’.

As always, Educators will remain available online in ColCampus, via email, Skype or telephone to support you with your studies.

I trust this will bring relief to all of our students who are currently concerned about unnecessary travel, group interactions and so on.

We will monitor the situation and will adapt further if need be.

We are in unprecedented times and share in your concern for yourselves, your friends, your family, and your colleagues.

We realise that you are apprehensive about your studies and general wellbeing. Boston City Campus wishes to assure you that you are our top priority. We will continue to support your studies safely, securely and with the least possible disruption.

We remain committed to continuing with our degrees, diplomas and higher certificates in the distance-online mode.
The good news is that the weekly teaching and learning, online ColCampus, telephone and email support, video lectures, online interactions, FA1 & FA2 due 8 May, continue regardless.

However, considering the latest developments and pronouncements regarding COVID-19, we remain closed for students who need to access computers and the internet at our Support Centres until Tuesday 14 April. If it is determined unsafe for you to return by this date, we will communicate a revised date to you via SMS, email and ColCampus.

We appreciate that this is a challenging time for all. Now more than ever, it is imperative to keep up with your studies from home and/or work. By focusing on your education, you are investing in yourself, and contributing to the critical human capital and leadership that will be required to move our country forward in the days and years that lie ahead.

Therefore, if you do not have computer and internet access, we strongly recommend that you allocate the budget you would have used for transport, towards this purchase. By doing this, you will not only enrich your studies but connect yourself permanently to the modern and global economy, opening up new possibilities for your future.
