Boston Students Place in Top Three at the Inaugural Private Sector Moot Court Competition

Boston City Campus’ commitment to ensuring that our LLB students do not just study law but also experience it in practice was on full display at the Inaugural Private Sector Moot Court Competition, held in September 2026 at the Eduvos Campus in Midrand. Boston City Campus law students proudly secured third place at the competition – going head-to-head against law students from other private higher education institutions. Our representative law students, Lethabo Makhubela and Brian Malesela, proved that Boston students are a force to be reckoned with, by beating the eventual winners of the competition in the early rounds.

The competition simulated opposed motion proceedings in the High Court, pushing students to navigate a complicated family law dispute. The hypothetical case challenged students to tackle the core issue of whether a customary "black coffee" ritual and the return of ilobolo could validly dissolve a registered customary marriage without a formal court decree of divorce. Section 8(1) of the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act 120 of 1998 provides that a customary marriage may only be dissolved by a court by a decree of divorce.

## Why Practical Legal Skills Matter in South Africa

The South African legal landscape is evolving rapidly. Today’s courts and law firms deal with complex, multidisciplinary issues that require far more than memorisation of theory. Theoretical knowledge is undoubtedly the foundation of any legal education, but relying on academic theory alone isn't enough to thrive under the high-stakes pressure of a modern courtroom.

Top employers are actively seeking graduates who can bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application. They want junior professionals who know how to draft immaculate court documents, sequence logical arguments, navigate procedural hurdles, and confidently address the bench. This is the shift from knowing the law to practising the law, and it is a transformation that must happen long before a graduate steps into their first job.

## Preparation and Training

To prepare for the competition, Boston’s students underwent a training process that went far beyond reading the facts. They conducted exhaustive research, drafted extensive heads of argument for both the applicant and the respondent, and grounded their submissions in the specific facts of the case. They engaged in intense oral advocacy practice sessions, revising their authorities, citations, and the fundamental logic of each argument. The students’ ability to defend complex legal arguments under intense judicial questioning is a testament to their dedication.

Lethabo remarked that "preparing for the moot court competition was one of the most challenging yet rewarding parts of the experience”. In her view, “One of the most rewarding aspects of the experience was knowing that our preparation had equipped us to compete confidently”. Brian commented that “as aspiring legal practitioners, we regard this as an important milestone in our development, bridging the gap between academic learning and practical legal experience”.

## Work-Integrated Learning (WIL): Building Professional Confidence

Team Boston’s success reflects Boston’s approach to legal education. We understand that professional confidence is built through Work-Integrated Learning (WIL). Boston integrates practical advocacy, research, and simulations directly into the LLB curriculum, repeatedly exposing students to realistic legal pressure so they are better prepared for the demands of practice. It is not our students’ only moot court success this year: in August, a team of first-year LLB students placed second for Best Heads of Argument for the Appellant at the [2026 Kovsie Moot Court Competition](https://www.boston.ac.za/blog/blog-boston-llb-students-kovsie-moot-court/)
, held at the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein.

## If this is the kind of law student you want to be

The [Boston LLB](https://www.boston.ac.za/higher-education/bachelor-of-laws-llb-degree/)
is a 540-credit degree at NQF Level 8 (SAQA ID 122702), completed in a minimum of four years, full-time or part-time. Boston does not use a points system for entry: the minimum requirement is a National Senior Certificate (or equivalent) endorsed for bachelor’s degree study.

**Practical legal advocacy is built into the programme. The curriculum immerses students in:**

- Legal research, legal writing and statutory interpretation
- Civil and criminal procedure
- Alternative dispute resolution
- A dedicated final-year Simulation module covering mock trials, mediation, and/or arbitration.
- Street Law, a compulsory final-year module in which students take practical legal education into their own communities.

**If a full LLB is not the right first step for you, Boston offers two other accredited routes:**

[1. Bachelor of Commerce in Law (BCom Law)](https://www.boston.ac.za/higher-education/bcom-law-degree/)
**:**A three-year degree suited for individuals who want legal knowledge applied in business contexts—such as compliance, governance, and contracts. It also provides a pathway into further legal study, including the LLB.

[2. Higher Certificate in Paralegal Practice](https://www.boston.ac.za/higher-education/higher-certificate-in-paralegal-practice/)
**:**If your National Senior Certificate is endorsed for diploma or higher certificate study rather than degree study, this one-year qualification is an accredited way in. On successful completion, it can be used to apply for admission to the BCom Law or the LLB programme.

## Step Into the Future of Law: The Skills Employers Want

Law firms and corporate legal departments look for graduates who can use the law under pressure. Our students do not just understand legal theory; they learn how to apply it, articulate it, and defend it.

Through participation in high-level events like the Inaugural Private Sector Moot Court Competition hosted by Eduvos, our students gain invaluable networking opportunities and receive direct feedback from senior advocates and legal practitioners acting as judges. They learn courtroom decorum, the art of persuasion, and the resilience required to thrive in the legal profession.

If you are an aspiring lawyer ready to bridge the gap between legal theory and the courtroom, it’s time to take action. Step into the future of law with a qualification designed for the real world.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is a moot court competition?

A moot court competition is a simulated court hearing. Teams of law students argue a hypothetical case before a panel of judges, usually legal practitioners or academics. Teams file written heads of argument, then present their case orally and answer questions from the bench.

### Does the Boston LLB include practical skills training?

Yes. Practical skills are built into the curriculum through modules in legal research and writing, civil and criminal procedure and alternative dispute resolution, plus two final-year modules: Street Law, and a Simulation module covering mock trial, mediation and/or arbitration. Students can also represent Boston in external moot court competitions.

### How did Boston LLB students perform at the 2026 Private Sector Moot Court Competition?

Boston City Campus LLB students Lethabo Makhubela and Brian Malesela secured third place at the inaugural Private Sector Moot Court Competition, held at Eduvos in Midrand in September 2026. The students also defeated the eventual competition winners during the earlier rounds.

### Can you become an attorney or advocate with a Boston LLB?

Yes, but the LLB is the first step, not the last. An accredited LLB from a registered private higher education institution such as Boston meets the degree requirement of the Legal Practice Act, as the Constitutional Court confirmed in 2019. Graduates must then complete practical vocational training (articles for attorneys, pupillage for advocates) and pass the Legal Practice Council’s competency-based examinations before they can be admitted.
